All EAS documents have a tree structure in common, which reflects the hierarchical arrangement of information elements.
Each information element belongs to one of the following types:

Structures a document into major segments (e.g. "Introduction", "Requirements For Business Partners", "Product Requirements").
There is no limit to the number of parts. However, a document must have at least one part.

An element used to structure a document.
Sections may be arbitrarily nested.

A self-contained unit of a discourse in a written text dealing with a particular point or idea. |
| Requirement Group |
G |
A special type of Section, which contains information about Requirements.
Requirement Groups cannot be nested.

A singular documented need of what a particular product, service or methodology should be or do.
A Requirement must have a Requirement Group as its higher-ranking element.
